About the Port of Muskegon

Muskegon County offers five commercial docking facilities providing a variety of shipping, logistics support, storage, towing, and ship repair services for corporations. Convenient options are available to deliver and receive goods from the Port of Muskegon, and move those goods to market, nationally and internationally. Muskegon Lake is the largest natural deep-water port in West Michigan. The Port of Muskegon handles over 1 million tons of freight, aggregate, coal and salt every year. In addition to our commercial port facilities, 12 recreational marinas operate on Muskegon Lake and over 20 charter fishing operations call Muskegon Lake home. White Lake, about 7.5 nm north of the Muskegon Lake Channel, has 8 recreational marinas and 12 charter fishing operators. A scenic cruise ship, the Port City Princess, offers leisure and dinner cruises on Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan from its berth on Muskegon Lake. Building on its tradition as a Port City, Muskegon County is also served by the Lake Express Ferry, a high-speed ship carrying passengers and vehicles across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee to Muskegon in just 2.5 hours, offering two runs every day during its May-October season.

Port of Buffalo – Buffalo, New York

About the Port of Buffalo

The Port of Buffalo, owned and operated by Gateway Metroport, ranks 28th amoung all U.S. seaports and seventh of the Great Lakes ports. Located at the eastern end of Lake Erie, it is 22 miles from Port Colborne, Ontario, the Welland Canal’s terminus on Lake Erie, and is the first major U.S. port of call encountered on entering the Great Lakes. Its central location within 500 miles of the major population and distribution centers of the Northeast and North Central States, and within 500 miles of 75 percent of the Canadian population, makes it ideal for industry and distribution.

The Port has excellent facilities: piers with 27 feet of water (Seaway standard depth) alongside, can accommodate seven vessels simultaneously. Two hundred acres located on or near deep water are set aside for bulk cargo storage; self unloaders and conventional bulk carriers can discharge and load while sheltered by the harbor breakwall. More and more shippers are taking advantage of the Port’s excellent bulk distribution facilities.

In addition to a number of heavy fork lift trucks, two portable conveyor belt systems and other modern material handling equipment, the Port recently acquired a 230 ton American crawler crane and a heavy duty front end loader. The crawler crane, when “married” to the Port’s existing 50 ton LeTourneau gantry crane, offers dramatic lifting capability. The LeTourneau, with its lifting capacity of 50 tons at 40 feet, has the accessories: hook, bridle, electo-magnet, sling and spreaders, to move any type of cargo quickly and economically. Its high mobility enables it to serve both the general cargo and bulk piers. A highly mobile Kolberg conveyor system is also available.

The Port of Buffalo is a member of the Council of Upstate Ports of New York, a forum for discussion and resolution of problems common to New York’s upstate port; it played a leading role in forming the Port of Buffalo Users Group, a cooperative unit formed by local shippers for consolidation of cargoes and inducement of regularly scheduled steamship services.

Port of Detroit – Detroit, Michigan

About the Port of Detroit

The Port of Detroit is located along the west side of the Detroit River, and is the largest seaport in the state of Michigan. The port is overseen by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, a five-member board of directors appointed by the State of Michigan, Wayne County, and the City of Detroit. The authority coordinates river commerce on the waters and shoreline of Wayne County. The port consists of multiple marine terminals handling general, liquid, and bulk cargo as well as passengers. The Port of Detroit’s single most valuable commodity is steel, and the largest commodity handled by tonnage is ore. Other important commodities handled at the port include stone, coal and cement.

The Port Authority is governed by a board composed of five members. Two members are appointed by the government of the city of Detroit, two members are appointed by the government of Wayne County, and one member is appointed by the Governor of Michigan. These parties also provide the operational funding for the authority. Day-to-day operations are overseen by a hired executive director. The authority is charged with the assisting in the application doling out of state and federal grants, as well as facilitating capital improvements of the port. The authority is also involved in environmental programs, such as removing abandoned vessels from local waterways, and is permitted to finance bonds for port terminals or other development along the riverfront.

The Port of Detroit contains a number of terminals in Detroit, River Rouge, and Ecorse. General cargo is processed through the NT&D Detroit Terminal and the NT&D Ecorse Terminal, operated by Nicholson Terminal & Dock Company. Specific liquid and

Detroit and Southeast Michigan enjoy a rich maritime history. In order to further that tradition and grow the maritime industry, the State of Michigan adopted the Port Authority Act in 1978. The City of Detroit and Wayne County followed suit by adopting a joint resolution creating the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA) in 1980. Since that time, it has been the mission of the Port Authority to foster the marine industry through governmental advocacy, commercial marketing and public finance. While the primary focus has been on the 15 to 20 million tons of commercial cargo and over 16,000 jobs related to the 22 private terminals located in Detroit and Wayne County, more recently, the Port Authority has expanded its efforts to include marine passenger operations and other efforts to assist the community in taking full advantage of the incredible resource that is the Detroit River and the Great Lakes.

The DWCPA exists to serve the maritime industry and those industries served by the maritime industry. In that capacity, we assist industrial development through the financing of new projects through ourselves or through collaboration with other economic development agencies. Additionally, the Port Authority is committed to ensuring the optimal use of Detroit and Wayne County’s waterfront for the needs of both industry and residents. The Port Authority is eager to serve the community and looks forward to hearing from you regarding any projects with which we may be able to assist.
